Hands-On Science at Everest Academy
Inspires Interest & Curiosity
Science is a fun and challenging learning opportunity at Everest Academy in Lemont, offering students various occasions for hands-on manipulating, laboratory experiments, and engaging discussions. The Roman Catholic school educates preschool through eighth grade in critical thinking skills, and its science program begins at age three in preschool. “In my classes, the goal is to incite interest, curiosity and wonder in the students, and they’re response is always very enthusiastic,” says Mr. Jon Predny, science teacher at Everest.
The science program in preschool exposes children to the scientific method with natural elements, basic experiments, and simple scientific instruments. A full science curriculum begins in Kindergarten, with the goal of familiarizing students with scientific principles, as well as concepts of earth science, the human body, and physical science. “The students’ favorite experiment this year was making ‘oobleck’ during the unit on solids and liquids,” said Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Joanna DiSabato. The Dr. Seuss-inspired gooey substance is a non-newtonian fluid, and pours like a liquid but is solid to the touch. “The five-year-olds were amazed that they created this slime out of common substances. They had a great time doing it.”

Everest Academy Invites White Pines Alumni for Reunion
Everest Academy is seeking to contact alumni of the former White Pines Academy to gather for the first reunion of the school this summer. The Roman Catholic school in Lemont, which began as White Pines Academy in 1996, has a growing number of alumni and plans to form an Alumni Association. For many years, White Pines Academy rented space in Lemont’s Lithuanian World Center and changed its name to Everest Academy when the school moved to its new facility on Bell Road in 2009.
“By gathering these alumni, we seek to rekindle friendships and build a support network of young men and women who experienced the well-rounded education for knowledge, faith, character and service,” says Mary DeRoche of Lemont, founder of White Pines/Everest Academy. According to Mrs. DeRoche, the school is seeking former students who have come from a variety of suburbs including Lemont, Darien, Naperville, Hinsdale, Lockport, Homer Glen, Willowbrook, Woodridge, Midlothian, Wheaton, Lisle, Orland Park, Palos Park, and Burr Ridge. “We are very excited to gather the White Pines alumni and see what they have accomplished throughout high school, college, and their young adult life.”

Everest Academy's Service Program Challenges Students to Make a Difference
Everest Academy in Lemont, an
independent Roman Catholic school in Lemont, helps its students develop a
‘heart for service’ by offering a robust program of community outreach
projects.
The extensive outreach program at
Everest complements the rigorous academic curriculum, helping the school
achieve its goal of a well-rounded education for leadership. Each grade at
Everest, including the preschool, takes on an age-appropriate service-related
project during the course of the academic year. These so-called “apostolic
projects,” named for the Catholic term “apostolic” which signifies helping
others out of love for God, help awaken in the students a sense of social
responsibility and a desire to help those in situations of suffering or
injustice.
This year the projects taken on by each grade
included outreach to the needy or lonely of the community for the middle school
students (grades 5 – 8), while the lower school (K – 4) took on projects to
show appreciation to those in our community who dedicate their lives to serve and
protect others both locally and abroad. The middle school’s outreach projects
included visiting the elderly residents at Alvernia Manor, a retirement
community in Lemont; Zacchaeus House, a not-for-profit home for disadvantaged
men in Chicago; and “Feed My Starving Children,” an international non-profit
Christian organization with a shelter in Aurora that offers free meals to those
in need. The lower school took on projects such as adopting the Lemont police
officers, fire-fighters, service men and women, and veterans, and sending cards
and treats to show gratitude for their service. The Kindergarten is currently
collecting toys and books for the new Children’s Memorial hospital, the Ann
& Robert H. Lurie Hospital of Chicago, to open in June 2012.

Everest Academy Awards $1,000 Grant to Orland Park Family

Everest Academy of Lemont announced April 20,
2012 that the Stan Pytel family of Orland Park was the first to receive a
$1,000 grant to be used toward next year’s tuition. The Pytel family applied
and qualified for the tuition grant, which offers tuition assistance to
families transferring to the private Catholic School from any non-Catholic school.
The Pytel’s have three children enrolling for the upcoming school year.
According
to Dr. Coleen Kelly Mast, Advancement Director at Everest, there are still
grants available for qualifying families.
Everest Academy is offering a limited number of $1,000 tuition grants to
the school for families that are new enrollees in the 2012-2013 school
year. The program, “Come Home to
Catholic Schools,” which is currently in effect during spring enrollment, was
influenced by the recent “Catholics Come Home” campaign of the Archdiocese of
Chicago and the Diocese of Joliet. The grant is in addition to the school’s new
tuition rates which reflect both today’s economy and the desire of families for
academic excellence and character development.

Everest Academy Collaborates with Local Businesses to Offer Extracurricular Programs
At a time when many schools are cutting
extra-curricular programs, Everest Academy of Lemont, Illinois continues to
grow its robust program of after-school activities and clubs with the help of
local businesses. The program offers an outlet for creative expression and
intellectual growth that reaches beyond traditional school hours, and saves
parents from extra driving time with one convenient location. The growing list
of over ten after-school activities and clubs are open to both students and
children in the local community. New additions this spring include Art, Dance,
and a preschool dance class.
Driven by Everest Academy’s mission of Integral
Formation and motto of “Always Higher,” the after school programs offer
students the opportunity to develop leadership skills to serve the community. Many of the school’s extracurricular
