Thy Kingdom Come!

Dear Parents and Families in Christ,

Greetings on the week of preparation for Holy Week!

I have great news to share with you: the Knights of the Altar are really excited about having the “Knight of the Altar Golden Book” and a real Templar Sword. Our Fellow Knight, Mr. Yep, has made this happen. Thanks, Mr. Yep! This is so cool and it teaches the boys so much about “brotherhood” and “fighting for Christ” that in many, many years from now, when our students will be walking with a cane, they will be able to say with proud: “I was a Knight of the Altar”.

Keep praying for each Knight’s holiness, which is what really matters to them. There will be a Sword Knighting ceremony and signing of the Golden Book after spring break. I’ll keep you all posted. God bless!

In Christ,
Br Juan LC

Student Council Members Come Forward

Would you like to run for student council?  This is an exciting opportunity for students to share their leadership qualities.  Student council works to lead our school as a charitable and dynamic place to be.

During the month of May students will campaign for an office in our student council.  Students will be required to present a five minute speech describing improvements that they would like to make, qualities that they possess, and examples of that these.  In essence, why should students vote for them?  Students must decide by Monday, May 2nd, 2011, if they are choosing to run for office.  During the week of May 2nd, they will have the opportunity to get their campaigns ready (make posters, buttons, stickers, etc.)  During the weeks of May 9th and 16th students will actually carry out the campaigning (displaying their posters, flyers, etc.)  On May 23rd, during our morning assembly, candidates will present their speeches.  Immediately following, students from K-8 will vote for their candidate.  The administration will count the ballots and winners will be announced that day at dismissal.

Duties include the following:
· President (8th grade) – Initiates and oversees all projects, is in charge of all meetings and student conduct during projects and activities.  Must also provide a monthly update for bulletin.
· Vice President (7th  grade) – In charge of meetings if president is not present, oversees and assigns committees, will handle all assignments as given by the president.
· Treasurer (7th grade) – Keeps track of all funding and costs of materials and supplies.  In addition, project the budget costs of all functions or activities and keep record of all money made by student council fundraisers.
· Secretary (6th grade) – In charge of taking notes from all meetings and providing a copy to student council members or staff.

Please direct any questions to Mrs. Fleck or Ms. Maher

If you would like to run for office, please read the above with your parents. Please be sure to turn in your completed entry form in the box located outside Mrs. Fleck’s class by May 6th.

Please complete this form and place it in Mrs. Fleck’s mailbox by May 6th.

For the last six months, all our students have been working hard to raise funds for the education of Juan Pablo and Amayrani, who are originally from Mexico. All of Everest Academy’s students are  very excited about this campaign and are seeing with their own eyes how individuals can help make a change in the world.

Our students have raised a total of $541.23. A check will be  sent to Catholic World Mission for Juan Pablo and Amayrani -- with a letter from each class, signed by every student.

Isn’t it great to have all these young men and women at Everest who really want to help other people? Imagine how much good our students will be able to do for the people around them in the future.

April 19 - Day of the Pope

April 19th is the anniversary of the election of Pope Benedict the XVI. Everest Academy celebrates this as Day of the Pope. The students are learning facts about the Holy Father, and will celebrate with a few added festivities to the day including a special surprise for all the students to be announced on that day! We look forward to celebrating our Holy Father, Vicar of Christ on earth, and we ask that we all keep him in our daily prayers as he leads the universal church.

Prayer for the Pope
Christ Jesus, King and Lord of the Church, in your presence I renew my unconditional loyalty to your Vicar on earth, the Pope. In him you have chosen to show us the safe and sure path that we must follow in the midst of confusion, uneasiness, and unrest. I firmly believe that through him you govern, teach and sanctify us; with him as our shepherd, we form the true Church: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.

Grant me the grace to faithfully love, live and spread our Holy Father’s teachings. Watch over his life, enlighten his mind, strengthen his spirit, defend him from calumny and evil. Calm the erosive winds of infidelity and disobedience. Hear our prayer and keep your Church united around him, firm in its belief and action, that it may truly be the instrument of your redemption. Amen.

On April 19, 2005,  Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, was elected the new Pope in the first conclave of the new millennium. He chose the name Pope Benedict XVI.  Some of his words on the day of his election were:  “Dear brothers and sisters, after the great Pope John Paul II, the cardinals have elected me, a simple, humble worker in the Lord’s vineyard.  I am comforted by the fact that the Lord knows how to work and act even with insufficient instruments.  And above all,  I entrust myself to your prayer.”

This coming Holy Week…

Spend some time together as a family attending Holy Week activities at your parish or with other Everest families on Holy Week Missions at St. Sylvester’s!

Holy Week is my most favorite week of the year! For the Catholic Church, it’s THE most important week, because during it we remember and relive the events of Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrection – how Christ saved us from sin because of His awesome incredible love for us, for YOU.

For the past 9 years of my life as a Consecrated Woman, I’ve had the huge gift of living this week very intensely by being part of Holy Week Missions. I usually stay at a parish here in Chicago with a group of girls, and together we pray and we serve. After looking at how much Christ loves us, we can’t help but jump out of our comfort zones and invite people to come to church (going door to door to houses in the area), serve the elderly at local nursing homes, and reach out to those who are homeless and lonely. In the afternoon, we put on a camp to help kids learn about and live Holy Week.  We also help the parish by cleaning and preparing their church for the different ceremonies and Masses. Living Holy Week with a parish and on a mission helps me to be more convinced of what Christ did and does for me. I can’t tell you how excited I am for this Holy Week!!

This can be your experience too. Here are some simple ways to help your family live this Holy Week in Christ’s Heart:
· Attend your parish’s ceremonies and Masses
· Palm Sunday: remember the palms? This Mass helps us relive Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem, realizing that He is applauded and welcomed now but in a few days He will be led out the same way to His death.
· Holy Thursday Mass: Christ offers us His love through His service (washes our feet) and through the Eucharist which He institutes tonight.
· Good Friday: the day Christ dies for us
· Parish Stations
· Communion Service
· Easter Vigil Mass: when Christ shows us through His Resurrection that He has conquered our sin and death, a consequence of sin
· Help your children follow Christ’s footsteps in the Everest Academy Holy Week activity booklet (your children will receive these next week)
· Attend Holy Week Family Missions – Wednesday night to Sunday morning, or you can pick a day or two to attend and help others experience Christ’s love

I will be praying for each one of you in a very special way this Holy Week. Dive into Christ’s love for you! Grab onto the gift He’s holding out to you on the cross: the gift of knowing that you are loved that much, you are worth that much suffering and pain, that heaven is yours for the taking now, that you can have hope. I pray that you can be blown away by this love Christ has for you.  Please keep the missionaries and myself in your prayers this week! Enjoy your much deserved and needed Spring Break!

God bless you!

Some of you may have noticed a clean scent drifting through the chapel or noted that the song books have silently found their places, and maybe you have even heard a flutter of angels‘ wings. If so, you‘re right, because the Chapel Angels have been at work! At the beginning of January, the 3rd  and 4th  grade girls volunteered to use their Thursday recess to make the chapel an ordered, clean and beautiful home for Jesus.

At the end of their cleaning time every Thursday, Miss Teresa leads them in prayer and also teaches them something new about the chapel. They even have their very own Everest Chapel Angel aprons that they paid for with their own money. Thank you to Mrs. Renee Yep for helping us design and order these beautiful aprons!

The Chapel Angels have been joyfully generous in giving up their recess time. They have been an example to us all of what it means to love Jesus and take care of His things! Thank you Chapel Angels! Keep your eyes open and just maybe you‘ll see one of those Chapel Angels fluttering by!

The Venerable Pope John Paul will be beatified on May 1st, Divine Mercy Sunday this year.

Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, reflected on John Paul's life and 26-year pontificate, "characterized by the passion to make known to the world in which he lived — the world of our tragic history in the course of two millennia —  the consoling and enthusiastic greatness of God's mercy.‖ "This is what he world needs," Father Lombardi said. "That is why we will have the joy of celebrating the solemn beatification on the day in which he himself wanted the whole Church to fix her gaze and prayer on this Divine Mercy."

"As you know," he said, "on May 1st I will have the joy of beatifying Venerable Pope John Paul II, my beloved predecessor."  Benedict XVI explained that the date that has been chosen for the beatification "is very significant." He said that "It will be the Second Sunday of Easter," which John Paul II entitled "Divine Mercy Sunday" and "on the eve of which his earthly life ended."  The Pontiff concluded, "Those who knew him, those who esteemed and loved him, cannot but rejoice with the Church for this event." Those who really knew Pope John Paul II well, need no explanation of why the Holy Father chose Divine Mercy Sunday as the date for the beatification in Rome.  The Vatican is preparing for record attendance which will be much more than just a beatification of a very saintly Pontiff. Those in the know, all agree that this coming Divine Mercy Sunday, will in part, fulfill the wishes of Pope John Paul, that the world come to a better understanding of Divine Mercy.

From his death bed came his last written words that he had prepared to be read on Divine Mercy Sunday, the day after his passing. They were read, as follows, on Divine Mercy Sunday:

“As a gift to humanity, which sometimes seems bewildered and overwhelmed by the power of evil, selfishness, and fear, the Risen Lord offers His love that pardons, reconciles, and reopens hearts to love. It is love that converts hearts and gives peace. How much the world needs to understand and accept Divine Mercy! Lord, who revealed the Father’s love by Your Death and Resurrection, we believe in You and confidently repeat to You… Jesus, I trust in You, have mercy upon us and upon the whole world.   Amen.”
Everest Academy‘s technology plan will be shared with parents in the near future. As part of the process of enhancing technology use in the classroom we hope to obtain Mimio brand devices that will allow for interactive white board use to enhance teacher lessons.

Recently parents and teachers were provided with a technology presentation on the Mimio brand interactive white board tools. If you were unable to attend this presentation, and you wish to learn more about this product, you may do so by viewing  an on-line presentation at this link:
www.mimio.dymo.com

We have a technology fund in place and our Manna and Box Tops income is directly allocated to this area.  Some of our parents have come forward to form a team to provide creative and community-enhancing ways to raise funds for technology in the school. If you are interested in assisting the team or making a contribution
please contact Cindy O‘Malley at
cindy@mpoinc.com or Nicole Stafford at nas103180@yahoo.com

The Direction of Technology Implementation in the Classroom at Everest Academy: The study of technology provides students the opportunity to master computer skills, understand the effect technology has on society, and develop the art of effective communication. Technology is taught as a tool for research and application of communication software. Lessons are designed to enhance students‘ learning experiences in other core subjects through instruction, discussion, and hands-on assignments. Self-discipline, concentration, commitment, teamwork, listening skills, honesty, self-expression, and creativity are fostered at all grade levels. Students are expected to become proficient in a number of software programs enabling them to determine the best possible software programs and research material for their presentations.
Homeward Bound
As we enter into Holy Week and prepare to commemorate the most important human event in history, the Passion, death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us reflect on how this amazing event not only changed the course of human history, but on what it meant for each one of us personally.  Jesus bled and died upon the Cross for ME, not just a faceless, nameless humanity.  And he loves me so much that he would do it all over again if necessary to save my soul…even if I were the only one on the face of the earth!  This means that I have been bought…and at what a price: the blood of my Savior.  I belong to Him.  I am not my own.  I was created to be one with God, and I have been his adopted child since the day of my baptism, a privilege purchased for me on the Cross.  My new home is heaven.  These are mind-blowing realities that need to shape my life, and effect absolutely everything I do…everything!  This is the foundation on which I must build my life.

I was struck when I read Jesus‘ words in the Gospel earlier this week, 'I do not belong to this world,' he declared to the Pharisees.  Each of us can truthfully repeat the very same words.   I do not belong to this world… I belong to heaven, and I am homeward bound.  Yes, we live in the world, but we are not of the world.  We are pilgrims just passing through on our way to our eternal homeland.  We dream about one day crossing the Jordan River, and entering into the Promised Land.

Do my thoughts, words and actions reflect this reality each day, or do I seem to be running after the things of the world?   Where‘s my heart?  Do I dream about heaven and seeing the Risen Lord face to face?  Or do I satisfy myself trying to create my own heaven on earth?  Am I able to give the passing realities and events that are going on all around me their proper value in the light of eternity?  Or am I blinded by the glittering attractions that vie for my heart on all sides?

Let‘s not satisfy ourselves with the passing treasures and pleasures that the earth has to offer.  Rather, let‘s keep our eyes on the prize…heaven, and eternity with God, with all the angels and saints.  Let‘s not live these Easter mysteries superficially, but enter into them with all of our hearts and souls, and allow them to really sink in.  These are our Easter mysteries.  They are wonderful.  And they define us.

Have a blessed Easter!

Hello! Summer is fast approaching, but we still have time to spread the word about Everest Academy. Let’s not forget that all of us here at Everest are the best promoters of our school!

A simple way that you can help is by going to www.patch.com and clicking on our school in the school directory. The more clicks we get, the higher our school will show up at the top.

Any school events that we could report on should also be featured and possibly be sent out as press releases. If anyone has ideas on events or has a passion for writing and would like to help, please let me know. Everyone’s talents here at Everest are greatly valued and appreciated.

Also, referrals, referrals, referrals! Do not forget about the wonderful reward that comes with each referral.

If anyone would like to share any marketing ideas please feel free to email me with them at any time. With the Lemont referendum not having passed, we can expect a lot of buzz coming toward the private schools. Let’s be prepared to show everyone how wonderful we truly are.
Thank You and God Bless!

Dear Parents,

The past few weeks the students have all been working on order in their classrooms and in their cubbies. I have noticed great improvement from some of our students, especially in our Lower School. They have all been trying to hang up their coats in the morning, and have their book bags neatly stored away. It is beautiful to see what a little encouragement can do for some of our students! Children are generally always eager to learn and to better themselves, and for this reason every moment is an opportunity to help form our students to be the best that they can be. I encourage you as parents to make sure there is a daily routine for them to follow at home, as that will only help them to be constant in forming the habit of being orderly. This is a well needed virtue that gives peace of mind to everyone, especially you as parents.

Know that you and your families are in our prayers as we get closer to Holy Week. We have reminded our students that Lent and Holy Week is a very special time to console the heart of Jesus, and to stop and remember the great love that Jesus has for each one of us. Our Mission Corp Volunteers will be going into each classroom next week with a simple activity to help the students come up with practical ways to live their Holy Week very close to Jesus.

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” 1 Jn 3:16 May these last few weeks of Lent be a time where we imitate Christ’s love for us by going out of our way to love those that Christ has put in our lives.

Count on my prayers for you and your family!

Dear Everest Dads and Moms,

Greetings on this sunny day, currently a balmy 34in Hillside. Sunday’s Gospel illustrated the Samari-tan woman’s thirst for God, her thirst for an answer to her life, for meaning, and it also showed how thirsty the Lord himself was to receive her love and be her life’s goal.

Everest Academy is extremely pleased to be able to offer you and your children the chance to participate in slaking people’s thirst for God, and God’s thirst for people’s hearts, right here in Chicago! Every year since 2005, the Legionaries and their friends have participated in "Holy Week Missions" held in 10 to 14 parishes in Chicago, from Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday. These missions consist of a little train-ing in personal prayer from Legionaries, training in some simple aspect of "missionarying", and time to practice it LIVE! Then there’s a meal and sharing of good stories of how things went.

Take a look at the schedule and give your kids a chance to practice a lot of leadership and self-confidence, along with learning about their faith and receiving a jolt of joy and enthusiasm as they spread the good news!
You can join us on any day, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, at these times:

MORNING -
START at St Gerald’s Parish (see attached) at
8.30 am for breakfast OR
9.00 am for a preached Gospel reflection OR
10.00 am for a "how-to" talk on the mission of the morning
END by staying for lunch at 12.30 pm at the parish

AFTERNOON –
START at St Gerald’s Parish (see attached)
12.30 pm lunch
1.30 pm door-to-door missions with a team of others AND
Stay as long as you want (see schedule), leave anytime!
Please email Arturo if you plan on attending – the night before is fine. His email is arturo@evansfood.com . Feel free to contact Br Juan Carlos Vazquez as well, the Master Missionary. Thanks sincerely.

Yours in Christ,
Rev. André LaSana, LC

Thy Kingdom Come!

Dear Parents and Families in Christ,

I’m sending to you some pictures of the great "Lenten Retreat" that we had on St. Patrick’s Day. It was a blast for everyone! We had talks, rosary, way of the cross, inspirational videos, fun, sports, pizza-lunch by the camp site and special deserts (cupcakes, muffins and shamrock shakes) thanks to James Beecher who turned 12 that same day! We had two teams and the winner got a prize at the end. We also gave out a "Charity Award", which was given to Jack Zabilka for having given his coat to someone who needed it and for having shown charity throughout that day and the past weeks. Great job, gentlemen!

Right before dismissal, we all got together to discuss what we wanted to do for Christ in order to better ourselves and to keep raising the standard. Each team jotted down some good points to work on. Keep it up! Never give up!

It was very fruitful and I hope that the seeds planted by God in their hearts flourish into a robust tree.

May God bless you all!
In Christ, Br Juan LC
MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS FAITH FORMATION -
LENTEN RETREAT

Thank you all very much for your participation and reenrollment. We are very pleased to say that the majority of our families are returning. Knowing that you will be back next year has been of great encouragement and is a confirmation of our unity and resolve to provide the best possible for our children. Thank you!

I would like to leave you with words from an audience of Pope Benedict XVI. "Because of our weakness it is difficult to be silent and sit before God. . . For this reason, during Lent, the Church invites us to be more faithful and intense in our prayer and to meditate at length on the word of God." It is hard at times to be in silence for five minutes anywhere. There are many demands and always something to attend to, as well as often noises all around us -- even if they are pleasant. Jesus in the Gospel calls us to go and pray in secret in our rooms so we can be in silence and hear what God has to say to us. As our Holy Father reminds us "Prayer is, in its depth, a relationship with God. A relationship does not imply talking at every second of contact. A relationship does imply sharing, listening, conversing."

Hopefully, in the remainder of this Lenten season, we can take extra moments to pray. No cell phone, no Blackberry, no iPod, no email, and no Facebook -- just time in silence with God, to hear what He is telling us. Count on our prayers for you and your families.
We are in the middle of the grace-filled season of Lent. At Everest we urge our students to go beyond giving up candy to making a Lenten program of resolutions to do good to others and to overcome some habit that gets in the way of giving their best. Some of the resolutions have been impressive and show the depth and seriousness of our children’s faith. A few are as follows: help my mother daily with my brothers and sisters and not put me first; take time to pray to God each morning for my family and all those in need; do my very best to be a positive example to my classmates; offer a daily sacrifice for our priests. . . All these fine resolutions lead us to conversion by leaving behind an old way of living and beginning to act in a better way in order to embrace new life in Christ. Our children are leading the way in taking these steps to conversion.
