By Ms. Theresa Maziarz, Formation Coordinator

Dear Parents and Families of Everest Academy,

After the Gala this weekend, I’m sure we’re more convinced and grateful than ever for the gift of integral formation offered at Everest!  We have such a great treasure!! This month we are focusing on two very important aspects of our students’ spiritual formation: learning how to live the virtue of modesty and learning how to live Lent as a time to come closer to Jesus.

Modesty protects and humbly respects what is precious and valuable, instead of flaunting it or disrespecting it.  Usually we think of modesty with dressing correctly, but it’s not limited to that. “Modesty includes conduct, gestures, language, reading and thought.” A modest person has self-respect and respects others and their privacy. He or she doesn’t barge in on others’ rooms, conversations, or personal situations. By their modest dress and behavior, a person tells others, “I am confident in who I am inside, and I respect the person you are inside too.” He or she doesn’t need to attract attention in superficial or ostentatious ways.

Modesty, like many virtues, begins at home. Parents are key in training their children.  Here are some ways that we can work at home to form modesty:

-  Always knock before entering a bathroom or before entering a sibling or parents’ room
-  Say “excuse me” when needing to interrupt a conversation.
-  Do not always answer “why?” questions. Many things are not meant to be shared with everyone, and this helps curb children’s curiosity.
-  Encourage family members to use bathrobes
-  Lead by example in dressing with modesty; with teens, help explain the message of self-respect or disrespect that they give with the clothing they wear
-  Compliment your children for their talents and acts of virtues, and encourage them to thank Jesus for those gifts. By doing this, you are helping them find security in their character and not only in their external good looks or successes, “what people see.”

As part of our Lenten preparation, the students will have the opportunity to console Christ’s suffering heart by taking thorns (toothpicks) out of Christ’s crown of thorns. After saying a prayer, offering up a sacrifice or doing a kind act, they can take out one of the toothpicks. This is a very visual way to help the students (and families and staff!) live Lent in a very active way, consoling Christ’s Heart.   God bless you and know that you are always in my prayers!

Here are just a few resources on the virtue of modesty:
