Congratulations to our State Science Fair Winners!

Three of our students made the 350 mile round trip trek to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale to compete in the annual Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) state science fair on Saturday, May 2, 2015.

Our three school finalists competed with nearly 1500 other students.  Over 1000 projects were judged and participants received one of the following certificates or medals (in order from lowest to highest): Participation, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Congratulations to our medalists:
  • GOLD       Sophia Colarelli ( Behavior Science)
  • SILVER    Hannah Yep (Consumer Science)
  • SILVER    Kate Beecher (Physics)

This was a milestone of sorts for our science program as this was the largest group of projects to go to state competition and the farthest distance traveled to compete. Thank you to Mr. Jon Predny, our middle school science teacher, and to our students and their mothers for making this possible.

Congratulations to all of our students who participated in the Regional Science Fair.

Our students were in competition with 50 schools and over 500 projects. Our students received Outstanding, as well as 1st and 2nd Honors. One student qualified to move on to the State Science Fair competition.

Everest Academy Annual Science Fair 2013

On the last day of January the Middle School students participated in our school Science Fair.  They presented projects on such diverse topics as microbiology, projectile motion, the speed of human senses, building a better solar panel, the bounce of a basketball, and the electrical potential of common vegetables.  Our students were proud to present their hard work to our panel of judges.  Most projects had begun back in November, others even earlier.  The confidence, poise, and their grasp of the scientific principles behind their projects astounded the judges.  One was so impressed that he asked for a tour and information for possibly sending his own son to Everest.  Thank you, middle school students and parents for your support and all your hard work!

Thank you to Mr. Jon Predny, our Middle School Science and Math Teacher, and special thanks to our Science Fair Judges!

  • Mary Stringham, a retired Everest teacher of math and science who was previously responsible for organizing our Science Fairs.  Thank you for all your hard work!
  • Mary Beth Sutkowski, a doctor or geriatric medicine and a judge of previous Everest Science Fairs.  Welcome back Mrs. Sutkowski!
  • Diadra Viz, who has a Masters of Science in Chemistry, has taught college mathematics and High School science.  She has also done research at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
  • Robert Predny, uncle of our own Mr. Predny.  He is a retired chemist for Sherwin-Williams and a graduate of the University of Florida with a Ph D. in Quantum Mechanics.
  • Ken Kranjiak, a graduate from Benet Academy and friend of Mr. Predny.  He is an Administrator working with the Material Science Division of Argonne National Laboratories.
  • Andy Yun , a graduate from Benet Academy and classmate of Mr. Predny.  He is a computer science graduate of Marquette University Wisconsin with 15 years experience in his industry.  At one time he was Mr. Predny’s lab partner in Physics.
  • Thomas Predny, father of Mr. Predny.  He worked in the sales and support of heavy industry and machinery.  As part of his work he went to City of Chicago science fairs at the Museum of Science and Industry, and awarded scholarship money for experiments of interest to his company.
  • Fr. Matthew Kaderabek, LC, our school chaplain, who joined us again as a judge as he traditionally has, bringing with him his invaluable experience as an engineer.
This year’s science fair drew to a conclusion on Thursday,  February 10th when six judges --

Dr. Peter Diamond, Mr. George Filpovich, Ms. Christine Gamache,  Fr. Matthew Kaderabek, Mrs. Rita Koziarski, and Dr Mary Beth Sutkowski -- donated their time and talent to judge this year’s entries and determine the winners.

Parents and each classroom were given opportunities throughout the week to view the projects.   Congratulations!

Dear Everest Students and Parents,

Our annual Science Fair has arrived!  This year our fair will be held during Catholic Schools Week on Thursday, February 3 and Friday, February 4. The fifth through eighth grade projects will be judged on Thursday.  Students in grades one through four are invited to participate although this is not mandatory. If a lower school student intends to take part, they are required to submit their ideas to their teacher, who will then give their approval for their project to be shown at the science fair. These students must bring in their pre-approved projects on Thursday, February 3 and will demonstrate them during the general viewing session held Friday afternoon for the parents.

If you have any questions, please email me at mstringham@everestlemont.com any time.

May God bless you,
Mrs. Stringham
