Congratulations to our Geography Bee finalists!

Earlier this month, our middle school students participated in class competitions to determine who would compete in the School Geography Bee that was held December 10, 2013.  Thanks to the great preparation of our students, it took several rounds of competition to narrow down to two finalists.  Congratulations to Max, our School Geography Bee Champion, who will go on to compete in the next round of the National Geographic Bee.

St. Anthony of Padua

St Anthony was born in Portugal in 1195. When he was a boy he wanted desperately to be a knight for the Church. But God had an even better plan in mind. Anthony would become a great crusader for the Church, but his only weapon would be his special love for the Child Jesus!

Anthony became an Augustinian monk at the age of 15. He studied hard. His heart was  burning to tell everyone about the wonders of Jesus’ love.  After Anthony became a priest, he heard of five Franciscan friars who had been martyred for their faith while on a crusade. Anthony became a Franciscan, but did not become a martyr.  Instead, God game him the gift of great preaching, and he converted countless souls.

One night, while staying at the castle of a friend, a great light came from Anthony’s room. Was it on fire? His friend rushed up the stairs and into the room, and saw that the great light came not from a fire, but from the Child Jesus! Anthony was raising Jesus up in his arms, and Jesus was reaching down to play with Anthony’s beard.

Jesus, help me WATCH, WAIT, and WORK to bring your love into my heart and my home!

St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi lived during a time when people thought too much about riches, and not enough about receiving the greatest gift - Jesus - into their hearts. One day when Francis was praying, he heard Jesus say, “Go, Francis, and repair my Church, which you see is falling into ruin.” From that day, Francis worked to build the Church. He started an order of poor monks called the Friars Minor, or Franciscans. They taught others to seek Jesus, poor and gentle, to fill their hearts. One Christmas Eve, Francis led the Friars Minor up a mountain to celebrate Christmas Mass. He had a new idea about how to share the joy of Christmas with his family of monks. There, before the altar, he had placed an empty manger. Next to it was a real donkey and an ox! After Francis read the Gospel, he prayed for a long time over the manger. Suddenly, people saw the Christ Child appear in the manger, smiling and looking up at Francis! St. Francis had invented the first nativity scene to help celebrate the wonder of Christmas!

St. Francis, help me use my talents and time to build the Church in my own home!

Dear Families,

Often overshadowed by the two days preceding it, Halloween (October 31) and All Saints Day (November 1), All Souls Day  (November 2) is a solemn feast in the Roman Catholic Church commemorating all of those who have died and are now in Purgatory, being cleansed of their venial sins and the temporal punishments for the mortal sins that they had confessed before passing away.

On All Souls Day we remember the dead at Mass and through prayer and acts of charity.   As Christians we have a serious duty to pray for the dead as an act of mercy and love.  In fact the Church devotes the month of November to praying for the Souls in Purgatory and participation in the Mass of All Souls Day is a good way to begin the month.

Also, through prayer, sacrifice, works of charity, and the patient endurance of suffering we can make reparation in this life for our sins.   If any reparation has been left unsatisfied at the end of our life we must finish that reparation in Purgatory before entering Heaven.

Rather than a strange doctrine or one which seems punitive, Purgatory should be comforting to us.  We cannot enter into God’s presence unless we are totally cleansed from all sin and its effects.  God gives us the opportunity to be purified in the next life for those things which we failed to make reparation for in this life. Knowing our own weakness, we should thank God for His love and mercy.

I am enclosing a prayer that could be helpful as we remember our loved ones during these days.  I also promise my prayers for your beloved deceased.  Please let me know if you have any special prayer requests.  May God bless each one of you and your families.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Kevin Baldwin, LC

Prayer for the Dead
Receive in tranquility and peace, O Lord, the souls of your servants who have departed this present life to come to you. Grant them rest and place them in the habitations of light, the abodes of blessed spirits. Give them the life that will not age, good things that will not pass away, delights that have no end, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Come out for some pampering and socializing with other moms - feel free to bring a sister, mom, aunt, cousin or friend!

Dear Everest Families,

Today we celebrated St. Ignatius of Antioch, one of the most famous of the Church´s early martyrs. His great love for Christ, especially in the Eucharist, is an example even for us in our present age.

Br Stephen, Br Juan, and I wanted to thank the Everest community for all their prayers and support. We´re just finishing the second week of our semester and are studying hard in preparation for the priesthood. Please continue to pray for us and for all our brothers here who are preparing for ordination.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Br. Brett Taira, LC

October 2013 Saint of the Month

Children of Fatima

Last weekend, Pope Francis performed the consecration before the image of Our Lady of Fatima, asking Mary’s help to “revive and grow faith.” Oct. 13 marked the 96th anniversary since the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to shepherd children Jacinta Marto, her younger brother Francisco and LĂșcia dos Santos at Fatima - who happen to be our Saints of the Month (see below)

One day in 1917, three shepherd children named Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco were tending their sheep near the small town of Fatima, Portugal. Suddenly, Mary appeared to them over the top of a small tree. She told them to come and visit her in that same spot each month. Mary revealed many things to the children, some of which were secrets. Soon, however, the town’s people began to get very curious. They tried to make the children tell them the secrets, which the children had promised Mary they would not do. A government official threatened to burn them alive in boiling oil if they would not tell him the secrets, but the children were responsible and remained faithful to their promise to do what Mary asked of them. In October, Mary appeared to the children one last time. There was a crowd of thousands of people gathered to watch. It was a rainy day. Mary gave all the people a sign -- the sun came out and danced in the sky! The doubting people became believers. They were now FREE to love God and each other!

Mary, help me be RESPONSIBLE in my actions,
just like the three humble children who did what God asked of them,
even when it was very hard. Amen
