During Catholic Schools Week, on February 2nd, the 7th and 8th grade students went to visit Dan Stopka at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Nineteen year-old Dan suffered a cervical spinal cord injury last summer while diving into unknown shallow water which left him a quadriplegic. The students are helping to support Dan by fundraising money to help pay for his medical treatment and also by their prayer and encouragement. (www.standfordan.com) The students presented Dan with a card they had made and also some of his favorite treats. Dan cheerfully answered questions for them and told them about the accident. Afterwards the students watched as Dan received some of his therapy.
“This revealed to me the importance of perseverance and courage in daily life. After seeing him in person, I realized that even though he was struggling with demoralizing immobilization, he kept a positive attitude…. His willingness to describe to us his experience, taught me that the little things that bother us everyday are nothing, basically insignificant, in comparison to what he has to go through.” - James Beecher, 7th Grade
“When I first saw Dan and the smile on his face because we came to see him, it just brightened my whole day… Dan taught me a couple of things that day and one thing was to always stay positive. Sometimes I get down on myself for one little thing but Dan didn’t give up. He kept fighting. Another thing he taught me was to be thankful for everything that you have and your abilities because in one split second, your life could change.” - Veronica Kopec, 8th Grade

“Dan inspires me by his effort in perseverance… He never gives up… I need to thank God more for my health, my ability to be athletic and simply to use my legs.” - Timothy Lawler, 7th Grade
Please join us in praying for Dan on this long road towards recovery. May God give him the strength and courage he needs to go forward in hope.
